Ms. Manami NAITO Mt. Apo Mountaineering Log

Woke up and got ready

I slept so well!
I noticed it was already 1:30AM, but all I had to do was put on my shoes and headlamp, so it was fine! 🙆
I'll put on sunscreen after the sun comes up!

Mary, sir Ota and Yoshi-san couldn't sleep because it was noisy around us⁉️

I didn’t notice anything at all, but apparently people were “tagay”-ing and partying all around us.

I guess this happens every night, so managing sleep and noise-proofing is super important!

Also, I thought I’d have sore muscles from the climb on Day 1, but I didn’t feel any at all!

That means I should be okay with the tough climb to the summit!

At this campsite, we could leave our tents and gear behind with someone watching over them in Camp Reyes, so for Day 2, we only packed the essentials for the summit hike!

Summit hike begins

We’re off!
The stars up in the mountains were beautiful. I don’t have great eyesight, so I couldn’t see them clearly with the naked eye, but the photos turned out amazing!

We turned on our headlamps and started hiking!

Steep slopes, rocky paths, and the cold hit hard.

Climbing in the dark on uneven terrain was tough… I definitely recommend bringing a super bright headlamp.

But the porters behind us lit the path for us with his light—so kind 😭

And get this: he was lighting the path with just his smartphone flashlight!

Carrying heavy gear, holding his phone in one hand, and lighting our way… what a superhuman…

It’s hard to see, but with just a faint light, we carefully made our way along the narrow, uneven path. 🔦

In the photo on the right, you can see the porter behind me lighting up my feet with his smartphone flashlight.

He’s just too kind 😭

4:30AM

We’ve come a long way up!

The rocky paths and cliffs were tough—we took lots of breaks.

Since other hikers were heading up to catch the sunrise too, we ran into some traffic!

We let people pass when we could and kept going.

We caught a view of Davao’s nightscape! Even at 4AM, so many lights were on!

Encouraging each other along the way.
The climb was tough, but chatting with Yoshi-san made it fun!
We really wanted to make it to the summit together, so we kept cheering each other on!

5:20AM

The sunrise is starting!
Suddenly, the sky started getting brighter super fast—orange and blue hues, so beautiful!
Will we make it in time? Final push!

5:40AM

Digos peak, Center peak, Kidapawan summit

We made it in time for the sunrise!
We saw it just before reaching Digos Peak, Center Peak, and Kidapawan Summit!
The wind was insanely strong—it was all I could do to stand! So cold!
Alright, time to conquer these three peaks!

The wind blew my hair upward, and the silhouette turned out so funny! 😆

6:00AM Center Peak到達 / 7:00 AM Digos Peakー6:00AM Center Peak / 7:00AM Digos Peak

The sunrise and cloud sea were absolutely stunning!
Being above the clouds felt like getting close to heaven. The fluffy clouds were so cute 🥰
We all stood in the crazy wind to take photos!
Sir Ota took his shirt off for a picture—so funny 🤣

Breakfast at the summit

  • Kidapawan summit

Before heading to Kidapawan Summit, we had breakfast!
Rice, fried chicken, and boiled egg today! So good! And of course, morning coffee is a must!
Our hiking package included premium coffee—so glad it did.

It really hit the spot for my tired, cold, just-woken-up body ☕️

Sunscreen on, and back to hiking!

8:20AM Kidapawan Summit到達ーKidapawan Summit

It felt like we were floating above the clouds—this was probably the most beautiful spot of all!

I took off my jacket for a photo too, just like sir Ota!

It was freezing, but the sense of accomplishment from reaching the top was amazing!

So glad we all made it together!

⛰️Kidapawan Summit

Descent

We went back down the way we came!
To be honest, I’m worse at descending…
It’s hard to control my balance on my toes, and I get scared of slipping, so I took it slow, step by step.
But the guides walked so fast—I was struggling to keep up! 😭
While resting, I discovered something shocking—my porter (nickname: Nagagutsu - Boots) had a big hole in his boot!
I figured those boots were for keeping feet dry, but with a hole that big… doesn’t that defeat the purpose? Just another classic Filipino moment 😆

But Nagagutsu is amazing! He kept offering his hand and helping me down every rocky part, even though I was scared and sliding all over the place! Gentleman😍
Filipinos who are both strong and kind are truly wonderful! 💓

11:30AM Camp Reyes到着ーArrived at Camp Reyes

Ginamay

Straight to lunch!
Today’s lunch: chicken curry, ginamay, and fruit salad!
The ginamay was so delicious!
Filipinos still won’t eat with us… Maybe next time I’ll let the Japanese group eat first, and I’ll join the guides after. ^_^

I tried a shower at the water source.
I hesitated to shower again today, but ended up deciding to wash my hair since sir Ota was showering too!
I found another water source further in—still just a trickle, but it was upstream from where they do the dishes, so the water was cleaner. I washed clothes and took a shower there!
The water was icy cold—my feet went numb—but shampooing felt great!

Hanging out with the Filipino guides!
Dinner was supposed to be at 5PM, but I had nothing to do until then!
I didn't want to nap or I wouldn’t be able to sleep later…
So I joined the Filipinos while they were cooking dinner!
I accidentally said Gusto mong tulog? (Want to sleep?) instead of Gusto mong tulong? (Need help?), which gave them a little bit puzzled 😅
Everyone kept saying nahihiya ako sayo (I’m shy to you), but whyyy 😢 I want to be closer to them!
Tonight’s dinner was my favorites: bulalo and tortang talong! Amazing!

They let me cut the corn ^^
I watched them cook, asked their names, ages, jobs, and learned a bit of Bisaya while chatting!
I gave them easy nicknames to remember—Nagagutsu(Rain Boots), Tsinelas(Slippers), Kamoshika(Deer), and also Kuya of NAgagustu, Kuya antok(Sleepy), Kuya Alfonso, and Papa Ko(my papa) - his name is Papa Dodong.
Papa Dodong is our guide Joemar’s wife April’s dad—he’s super cool and totally my type of handsome older guy ^^💕
Nagagustu was still working even after carrying our gear, helping out with the cooking—what a masipag (hardworking) person!
When he had downtime, he was playing Tetris on his phone lol.
Mary showed up halfway and joined us watching the cooking!
She taught me some Bisaya phrases and I tried them out with the group!
I couldn’t understand everything they were saying in Bisaya, but Mary told me they were saying things like, “This one’s funny,” and “Happy she’s speaking Bisaya.”
I was worried they were getting annoyed with me, but I felt like we got a little closer, which made me so happy! 😍

Dinner & bonding

Dinner time!
Finally, the Filipinos ate with us today!
Though we Japanese still got served first, just being able to eat together made me super happy!
It was cold, but the food tasted even better because of that 🎶
Traveling is really all about connecting with the locals, right? 👍

Manami!

Did dishes with the porters 🎶
One of the porters, Slippers, came to the water source still in his sleeping bag—so funny!

Even though the ground was uneven! He said he was freezing 😂
They asked for my name, and soon everyone was shouting “Manami! Manami!”—so embarrassing, but maybe they remembered my name. We’re doing dishes together again tomorrow~

Tomorrow is the last day!
After dinner, everyone went back to their tents to get ready for bed.
I wiped off my body, changed into my clothes for the next day, organized my stuff, and went to sleep!
Now that I’ve finally started to get close to the Filipinos, I’m sad we have to say goodbye tomorrow 🥲🥲

📝🌝Day 2 Reflection
Today, I asked the porters what their main jobs were, and they all said farmer ng gulay (vegetable farmers)!
Looks like they grow carrots, cabbage, and potatoes—just like the ones we saw while climbing!
They said they bring the veggies to market once every three months, so maybe working as guides and porters fills in the income gaps.
And seeing how masipag (dedicated) they were today, I really felt again that paying them 3000 pesos is totally worth it!
I think I got a lot closer to everyone today, so tomorrow I’ll try to connect even more and communicate as much as I can!!
