 前日準備編

少し前の話になりますが、2025年4月にPMCEIの社長、太田さんと一緒にフィリピンでいちばん高い山のマウントアポに登った記録をここに残そうと思います！

I’m Manami Naito, a student at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and am currently working as an intern at PMCEI!

This happened a little while ago, but I’d like to share our experience of climbing Mount Apo—the highest mountain in the Philippines—with PMCEI’s president, Sir Ota, back in April 2025!

This blog post, “Preparation Day,” is the first in a series where I’ll be sharing my experience of climbing Mount Apo!

Following this, I’ll post about: “Day 1: April 17,” “Day 2: April 18,” and “Day 3: April 19,” detailing the full journey of the hike!ーwhere I’ll share not only the details of the hike, but also the attractions of Mount Apo, the joy of hiking in the Philippines, and my interactions with the amazing Filipino people! 今回の「前日準備編」では、マウントアポの登山に必要な道具の買い出しを中心にお話しします！🥰

For this “Preparation Day” post, I’ll mainly talk about shopping for the gear I needed for the hike! 

実は私の登山経験は浅く、最後に登ったのは小学校の時の500メートル級の新潟県の山です。

なので、登山に必要なシューズも持っていないし、まずフィリピンで登山をするなんて思ってもいませんでした！😂（マウントアポに登ろうと言い始めたのは私なんですが、、、😅）

To be honest, I don’t have much hiking experience—the last time I hiked was a 500-meter-tall mountain in Niigata when I was in elementary school.

So I didn’t even own hiking shoes, and I never thought I’d go hiking in the Philippines! 😂

(Though I was the one who brought up the idea of climbing Mount Apo…😅)

好奇心のみから始まった高すぎる目標への挑戦ですが、万全の準備で挑めば精神的には安心！

それでは買い出しに行きましょうー！

It was an overly ambitious challenge born from pure curiosity, but if you prepare thoroughly, you can feel mentally ready!

So, let’s go shopping!

万全の準備と言っても私はまだ学生なので、登山用具はほとんどセカンドハンドショップで揃えようと思っています。

フィリピンのセカンドハンドショップといえば、Ukay-ukay!

ダバオには大きなUkay-Ukayがあると聞いたのでそこに向かいます！

Since I’m still a student, I decided to get most of my gear from secondhand shops.

In the Philippines, those are called Ukay-Ukay!

I heard there’s a big Ukay-Ukay in Davao, so that’s where I headed!

今回行った場所はここ！（マップにあるハートマーク3つ）

私が滞在していたホテルが「NCCC モール VP」と買った場所の近くだったのですが、その目の前の通りから出ているバンケロハン行きのジープに乗っていきました！

運賃は大体20ペソ(50円)くらい！🚍

Here are the places I visited! (See the 3 hearts on the map 🗺️)

I was staying at a hotel near NCCC Mall VP, and I took a jeepney heading to Bankerohan from the road right in front of it.

The fare was about 20 pesos (around 50 yen)! 🚍

• シューズのUkay-Ukayがたくさんある

• 購入品：ハイキングシューズ

2. GREEN SON KOREAN SURPLUS BANGKEROHAN (map)

• 家電用品等のセカンドハンドショップ

3. San Pedro street (map)

• 衣料品のUkay-Ukayが道沿いにたくさんある

• 購入品：日除け用の薄めの上着、帽子、軍手、運動用パンツ、運動用ショートパンツ

4. Unitop (map)

• サンペドロを進んだ先にある小さいホームセンターのようなもの

• 購入品：インシュレーターフォームシート(日本語でなんというかわからないのですが、アルミの間に発泡ポリエチレンが挟まれているもので、断熱や緩衝材としての効果を持っています！テントでの睡眠の際に利用します！)

1. Bankerohan public market（バンケロハン）

ジープから降りた後はまず最初にバンケロハンのUkay-Ukayを探しにいきました！

色々売ってるのかなーと思いきや、靴だらけでした！！👞

サンダルやシューズなどたくさんの靴がありましたが、今回の目的はハイキング用のシューズなのでたくさんある靴屋さんの中からハイキングシューズを探しました！

Once I got off the jeep, I started looking for Ukay-Ukay in Bankerohan!

I thought they’d sell all kinds of stuff, but it was mostly shoes!! 👞

There were sandals and sneakers everywhere, but since I needed hiking shoes, I carefully browsed through all the shops.

私が目をつけたハイキングシューズは、この3種類！綺麗で足のサイズにもフィットしました！

セカンドハンドなのに綺麗すぎるなーと思っていたら、近くで一生懸命に靴を洗っている男の人がいました！masipag!!(仕事熱心だなあ！)

最終的に選んだのは右の写真の下部にあるオレンジ色の靴です！！

セカンドハンドの靴は壊れたものを修復して売っていたり、偽物があったりするみたいで、慎重に選んでお店のお姉さんにも何度も「壊れてない？」と確認して決めました！！😤

最初は700ペソと言われましたが、たくさんねぎって600ペソ(1500円)にしてもらいました！もうちょっと下げたかったな、、手強かった、、😅

この時点ではいい買い物ができたと満足していましたが、後々になってびっくりすることが起きました、、、。

These were the three pairs I had my eye on! All in good condition and fit my feet!

I noticed a guy nearby scrubbing shoes really hard—masipag!! (so hardworking!)

In the end, I chose the orange pair at the bottom of the photo!

Since secondhand shoes can sometimes be repaired or even fake, I carefully inspected them and kept asking the shop lady, “Aren’t these broken?” 

Originally, they told me 700 pesos, but I bargained it down to 600 pesos (about 1,500 yen)!

I was hoping for even lower, but she was a tough negotiator…😅

At the time, I was happy with the purchase—but later, something surprising happened…

⚠️本当はブログを読み進めてもらうために後に取っておきたいネタですが、皆さんが後悔をすることのないようにここで声を大にしていいます！

「Ukay-Ukayで靴は買っちゃダメ‼️」

ここで買ったハイキングシューズですが、登山本番の最終日に靴の底が外れているのを見つけ、ボンドで貼り付けられていただけだということがわかりました、、、。

お店の人に聞いて確認もしたし、自分の目でもしっかり確認したのに、ちゃんと壊れてました、、、。

私が登山をした際は大雨になることもなく、底が外れたのも下山してから気づいたので大惨事にはなりませんでしたが、大雨で地面がぐちゃぐちゃになっている時に靴が使えなくなってしまったらとても辛い登山になってしまうと思うので、買わないでください！😭

⚠️ Important note—though I’d rather save this story for later to keep you reading, I have to say it now so you don’t regret it!

“Don’t buy shoes at Ukay-Ukay‼️”

The hiking shoes I bought had their soles peeling off on the final day of the hike! Turns out they were just glued on…

Even though I asked, checked, and inspected them myself—they were still broken 😭

Luckily, it didn’t rain during our hike, and I only noticed after descending, so it wasn’t a disaster.

But if it had rained, and my shoes fell apart mid-hike… that would’ve been terrible.

So please—don’t buy secondhand hiking shoes!! 😭

2. GREEN SON KOREAN SURPLUS BANGKEROHAN （通称: サープラス）

靴を売っているUkay-Ukayで他の登山用具も探そうと思っていましたが、ぐるぐる回ってやっぱり靴しか売っていなかったので、

靴屋のおじさんにハイキングポールを売っていそうな店を聞きました！

そこで、目の前にサープラスという韓国から輸入された道具を売っているお店があるということだったので、そこに行きます！

After realizing the shoe shops didn’t sell much else, I asked one of the vendors if he knew where I could find hiking poles.

He pointed me to a surplus store right across the street that sells imported gear from Korea!

左の写真のように、電子レンジなどの小さな家電から浴室層や商業用の大きな台所まで、色々なものが売っていました！

たくさんものがある中からやっと右の写真のハイキングポールを見つけましたが、傷があって片手分しかないにも関わらず、500ペソくらい(1300円)の料金を提示されたので、絶対に他にもっと安くていいものがあると思い、ここで買うことは諦めました！

They had everything—from microwaves to bathtubs and commercial kitchen equipment!

I finally found a hiking pole, but it was scratched and they only had one, and yet it still cost about 500 pesos (1,300 yen).

I figured I could find something better elsewhere and left without buying it!

3. San Pedro street（サンペドロ）

サープラスの後は、近くにあるサンペドロストリートという道に入りました！

ここもUkayーUkayがたくさんあるということだったので、服などを探していこうと思います！

Ukay-Ukayではありませんが、登山で手が汚れても良いように、軍手を買いました！通りがかりのサリサリストアで、内側がゴムになっているものが50ペソで売っていました！

Next, I walked to nearby San Pedro Street, known for its many Ukay-Ukay shops!

Here, I looked for clothes and gear.

Not Ukay-Ukay, but I found rubberized gloves at a sari-sari store for 50 pesos—perfect for getting dirty while hiking!

Ukay-Ukayのほとんどはこんな感じ！大量の服が積み上げられていて、そこから自分で掘り出し物を探します！

すごい数の服だなあと思っていても、サンペドロにはこの規模のUkay-Ukayが何件も並んでいるんです！尋常じゃない量がここでは売られています！

そして、写真にある「25」の数字は帽子や服が一枚25ペソで売られているということです！安すぎる！🫨

Most Ukay-Ukay looked like this—huge piles of clothes you dig through to find gems!

Even though it looked like a lot, San Pedro has multiple shops like this all lined up—so many clothes!!

And the “25” sign means clothes or hats are just 25 pesos each! So cheap!! 🫨

私がサンペドロのUkay-Ukayで購入したものは以下になります👚

• ヨガパンツ2枚：200ペソ

• 運動用ショートパンツ2枚：150ペソ

• 帽子：25ペソ

• 日除用の薄めの上着：50ペソ

安すぎますね嬉しい😆🎶

Here’s what I bought at San Pedro:

• 2 yoga pants: 200 pesos

• 2 workout shorts: 150 pesos

• 1 hat: 25 pesos

• 1 light jacket for sun protection: 50 pesos

So cheap—I’m thrilled! 😆🎶

それにしてもたくさん歩いた！疲れたよう！

朝8時にマーケットまで向かってきて、現在は10時前です！

皆さんも買い物に行く時は、ずっと外にいることになることを覚悟しておいてください！

なるべく早い時間に行って、水分補給を忘れずに！！

I sure walked a lot today—so tired!

I headed to the market around 8AM, and now it’s not even 10AM yet!

If you’re planning to go shopping like this, be prepared to be outside the whole time!

Go as early as possible, and don’t forget to stay hydrated!!

4. Unitop

必要な服を揃えた後は、インシュレーターフォームシートとハイキングポールを探し続け、サンペドロをずーっとまっすぐ進んできました。

さすがに暑すぎる！

荷物も少しずつ増えてきて、もう諦めようかなと思いはじめました、、、。

ですが、通りのフィリピン人に聞き回ってやっとそれらしいお店の名前を聞くことができました！Unitopと調べてみると、なにやらホームセンターっぽい写真が出てきます！

最後の力を振り絞ってここまでいこう！

After getting all the clothes I needed, I kept searching for an insulator foam sheet and hiking poles.

I walked all the way down San Pedro… it was so hot!!

My bags were getting heavier and I started thinking of giving up.

But I asked some locals and finally got a store name—Unitop.

I looked it up and it seemed like a home center, so I used my last bit of energy and headed there!

見つけたよーん！インシュレーターフォームシート！

10mmのダブルを160cmほど買いました！

それで118ペソになりましたー！！

でもこれを持って帰るのはチョット恥ずかしいなあ😅

I found it—my insulated foam sheet!

I got a 10mm-thick double-sized one, about 160cm long, for 118 pesos!!

But honestly… carrying this around was a bit embarrassing 😅

買い物を終えて疲れたので、帰ります！

お店のガードマンに聞いて私が滞在していたホテルの近くの「NCCC モール VP」行きのジープが通る場所を探しました！

ここでもめっちゃ歩いた！！

I was super tired after shopping, so I decided to head back.

I asked the security guard which jeep to take, and found the one going back to “NCCC Mall VP,” near my hotel.

Even this time—I walked so much!!

インシュレーターフォームシートが大きいので、ジープの中では輝いて目立っていました！

そんなに人が乗っていなくてよかった！

帰りも運賃は大体20ペソ(50円)で、今日はとても良い買い物ができたなと思いました！

Because the foam sheet was big, it totally stood out on the jeep!

Luckily, there weren’t many people.

The ride back also cost about 20 pesos, and I felt really satisfied with everything I bought today!

なんと今日の歩数は午前中だけで20000万歩近くになりました！

頑張ったー！

登山本番に向けた身体と精神の鍛錬になったかな🎶

Believe it or not—I walked nearly 20,000 steps just in the morning!

I worked hard today! Maybe this was good training for the real hike ahead 🎶
